I tend to dress how I feel. Feeling edgy? My gold plated spike bangle set is front and center. Feeling bored and somewhat un-pretty? I have a pair of very, very simple marquise shaped CZ vintage studs that are no frills. Feeling sexy? My gold and black tassel earrings will answer the call. But, not every day is a good day and not every day has me playing jewelry dress up.
When I am feeling ho-hum about my jewelry, that slump tends to spill over into my day of to-dos and my indifferent attitude rears its ugly head. There are days when I am in such a rut with my jewelry that looking through my collection makes me feel “meh”.
Do you ever get this way? The feeling is very similar to “I have nothing to wear!” It happens more often than you might think, and it might seem like there is no solution to this annoying problem.
Never fear! I have put together a fool-proof list to help you dig yourself out of that jewelry funk you currently find yourself and get excited about accessorizing again!
Buy an amazing statement piece
In my other post, I talk about going bold or playing it safe with your accessories. While some fashionistas like minimal, it’s easier to make a statement with your jewelry by challenging yourself to find one amazing statement piece. This can be anything from a necklace, a bracelet, or a pair of killer earrings. Keeping your jewelry pieces cool and casual can work for many corporate occasions. But down the road you will soon find this a surefire way to feel uninspired.
Whatever you buy, make sure its something you really love and can pull off effortlessly. Otherwise you will find that you will never wear it. It will end up collecting dust in your jewelry box, and then eventually find its way into the donation pile.
How do you get used to such a statement item? Try to incorporate this single piece into one outfit a week, you will be amazed at the compliments you will get and how easy it will become to step out of your comfort zone.
Try the latest jewelry trend
I get numerous questions like “my jewelry is so out of date, what do I do?” My answer is always check out the latest jewelry trends when your personal style feels left behind. There are so many trends happening with jewelry right now, but you are bound to find a reoccurring theme – either simple and chic, or big and colorful.
This season’s hottest jewelry trends include shoulder dusting tassel statement earrings. Trends have also gone retro with 90’s inspired chokers and body chains. Why not break out of your rut and jump on the bandwagon? Check out bloggers (like myself) that are talking about the latest jewelry trends and emulating some of those looks in your own style. Careful not to become a trend chaser! Choose one or two pieces that you really, really love and add them to your collection. You can always make the trend your very own.
Add in your existing pieces
Not all of us have hundreds of dollars to put towards fashion trends. On a tight budget, or don’t like to spend needlessly on trendy pieces? I totally understand you. There is still a way to revive your jewelry slump by being just a little creative. Try switching things up by layering in pieces you already own. Mix and match different items to create an all new style!
You may have a standard go-to by pairing this necklace and that earring with every single outfit. This outfit ensemble may work like gang busters, but it will easily get you into a boring routine and you will lose inspiration and creativity. Let’s break out of that pattern by mixing a couple of necklaces, bangles, or rings that you would normally never stack. Play around with some your forgotten pieces and don’t forget to add in some texture and color to the mix for a fun new look with your current inventory.
Mix and Match colors
Who said gold only goes with gold and silver only goes with silver? Mixing metals is a very fun and creative way to add new life to your jewelry collection. Look for metals that are different from your standard gold or silver. Rose gold is totally on trend right now, and while you’re at it, try gathering some brightly colored gemstones.
Not huge on a lot of color in your jewelry? No problem! Add fabrics and textures such as leather, suede, feathers, wood, string or stones. You will be amazed at the difference you see!
Step out of your comfort zone
You can change your jewelry look the exact same way you change your overall style. If you are brave enough to step out of your comfort zone and think outside of the box, you will find a whole new world of accessories you’ve never dared to try before.
If you tend to be more minimalist with your overall aesthetic, try something over the top and statement. Start off slow with one piece to dip your toe in the water. Buy a single statement ring and wear it once a week; or a purchase a pair of tassel or large drop earrings and wear them to an event. Then, when you become more familiar with your new look, start adding more pieces more often!
If you are usually prim and polished, try out the bohemian lifestyle. Start integrating patterns, multi-layered necklaces and suede/leather fabrics into your jewelry collection.
Even something as simple as switching from all silver to all gold jewelry can make a drastic difference and help you to break those old habits.
